Je suis fini!
I don’t have a lot of photos for this post because it rained buckets pretty much our entire day. We made it however and completed our journey from Porto to Santiago
Yes, those are our absolutely gorgeous jackets that we are wearing and although quite ugly they function as coveralls for both ourselves and our packs. They also double as sweat tents. Seriously, they were a godsend today.
I did manage a couple of other shots today.
My sis-in-law and I drenched but enjoying a cafe americano.
Here is my brother on the bridge over the river “something”.
And here is the actual river “something.”
Upon arrival in Santiago we first set out to attend the pilgrim mass in the cathedral. After climbing the steps to enter we were told “no backpacks.” And so began the search for where to leave them. Finally we discovered a jewelry store which, of course, had an empty vault into which we could, for the price of €2 per pack, store our belongings for the day.
By the time that business was taken care of, the church was too packed to render any of us a seat. We separated and found spots from which we could sorta watch the mass.
Of course we couldn’t understand any of it because it was in Spanish, but we were there!! We were fortunate to be there on a day where someone had paid €400 so that we could witness the swinging of the Botafumerio. I did not take pictures but here is a link to someone else’s if you are interested:
After mass we made our way to the credential office to stand in line and receive our paper proof of completion. While in line we were approached by a woman named Bernie who invited us to come upstairs to room number 6 and visit with other English speaking pilgrims . Sort of a de-programming practice. We did and I think it was very good for all of us.
Besides coffee and tea we received some valuable information on where to eat that night.
Following our respite we made our way to our appointed flat where the landlady met us with keys and welcome.
Dinner at Mandolos was perfect. Price fixe but choices! I had the Padron peppers, salmon and flan. Then home in the rain and to bed.
